Catching lightning in a bottle. That was how Dad had always described falling in love with Mom. Like something unexpected, magical, something that happened so fast and so hard, you almost don’t know what to do about it. Lightning in a bottle was how he had loved Mom.

Even then I remember thinking how dangerous that seemed. Why the hell would anyone even try to catch lightning in a bottle?

Running around outside in a thunderstorm with a glass bottle and metal lid didn’t seem like something any sane person did. Even at thirteen it seemed like an unappealing metaphor, but maybe an accurate one. Trying to catch lightning in a bottle would most likely kill you.

But of course, even at thirteen, I knew the truth about love. I’d seen its effects firsthand. I’d seen how losing my mother had eviscerated my dad. Seen how his love for her had been the hand that reached straight into his chest and ripped out his still-beating heart.

That’s the analogy everyone uses, right? The heart-ripped-out-of-the-chest analogy.

Having seen heartbreak up close and personal, I think that’s insufficient. Mom’s death pulled out not only his heart, but all his other organs, too. His guts. His spine. His very soul. Her death left him as nothing but an empty shell.

And it left me with the job of putting him back together. Cobbling together the pieces of my father and our life like some sort of tween-aged Frankenstein.

So yeah, I know exactly how dangerous love is. I know the full force of its deadly power. I know love and it terrifies me.
